cost me 260 for the alternator and the belt (220 and 40), and 190 for the labor.
I just had an alternator on a 2008 Scion XD replaced at the dealership and if it weren't for the extended warranty I'd purchased, I was told it would have cost around $650. This seems INSANE to me. I've never payed more than $250 to replace alternators (with new parts) on any of the cars I've owned over the past 30 years.
To change the alternator on a 2008 Scion xD, first disconnect the negative battery terminal to ensure safety. Remove the serpentine belt by releasing the tensioner, then disconnect the electrical connectors and mounting bolts from the alternator. Carefully take out the old alternator and replace it with the new one, securing it with the bolts and reconnecting the electrical connections. Finally, reattach the serpentine belt and reconnect the battery terminal.
