It's difficult to figure it out for cordless vacs, but easy for plug in ones. First you need to know the wattage, which you figure out using the voltage and the amperage. You multiply the volt by the amps. So the outlet you plug into is 110 volts, now say your vacuum is rated for 7 amps. That's 770 watts. 1 horsepower is 746 watts, so that would be 770 / 746 = 1.03 hp for a 7 amp vacuum.
