you have a dip stick you look at that when the engine is cold the top it up until it is at the maximum point on the dipstick. The dipstick is normally around the large block area of the engine not to hard to find it normally has a little handle or ring that you pull to get it out

You put in what the capacity is with oil/filter change. If you do not have an owners manual park the car on a level surface. Drain the oil and replace the oil filter. Add 4.5 quarts of oil and start the engine. Let the engine run for 45 seconds and then shutdown. Wait 30 minutes and check the oil level. Add as necessary to reach the full mark on the dipstick. You now know the capacity.
