That was happening to my Ford Focus, turns out it was the alternator, i got it changed now it turns on...
Voltage regulator is more than likely defective. The Regulator is built into the alternator so you will have to replace the entire alternator. Just make sure it is really overcharging. You should read from 13.5 to around 15.5 volts with a digital DC voltmeter if the alternator is performing as it should. Must more than 15.5 volts and it is overcharging.
There is no reset for the charging system light. If it is on then you have a problem. More than likely the alternator is defective.
Go to NAPA and buy a Repair Manual.
It should take around about an hour, varies on if you have anything ready.
About $550 to $600.This included a new Ford alternator.My father just had one replaced.
