As of October 2010, the average price for a litre of Petrol in the UK is £1.199

The cost would be split as follows

Product = 39.85p

Retail and Distribution = 5p

Fuel Duty = 57.19p (tax)

VAT = 17.86p (tax)

75.05p in tax or 62.6%

-------------------------

Assuming lines 1 to 6 are correct, line seven is TOTALLY misleading. This makes people think tax on petrol is 62%. Whereas the person means 62% of the total. The actual percentage is 75.05/44.85x100% = 167% tax

So tax on a MARS bar = 17.5%

Tax on petrol = 167%

Fair? When was the last time a politician was honest enough to mention percentage tax. Instead they say 3p added per litre, etc.

A couple of years ago the petrol was only about 20p, which made the percentage tax around 500%!
