For portable power generation, many manufacturers now make proper 'sine wave generators" in which the voltage from the generator (generated as AC for simplicity), is rectified to DC, and then passed through some electronics to convert it into a good quality 50hz (or 60Hz) sinewave.

Because of the electronic conversion to AC, even when the generator comes under a step in load, the frequency will remain constant. But of course, the voltage may stumble a little.

I'm not sure how resistant such machines are to changes in the phase angle of the load.

A simple alternator will be entirely dependent on the load changing the motor speed.

How long will an alternator last when the diodes start going bad?

It's not a good idea to to run your alternator with bad diodes. These diodes rectify the ac power generated by your alternator and turn it into dc power. You will destroy other electrical components in your car and will end up spending more money than the cost of simply replacing your alternator.

How does A Frequency Converter circuit diagram look like?

Depends if you want to convert an RF signal to a different frequency, as all superheterodyne circuits do (most TVs and radios). That's called a frequency mixer. If you want to change a power line frequency to another, rectify it to DC, then chop with an inverter.
