If it is tightened too hard it will strip the threads out of the oil pan and need to be re-threaded with a larger size drain plug, which is a waste of both time and money, so go slow and easy with it. Tighten the oil filter 3/4 turn after it makes contact with the mounting surface, no more, no less. Tighten the drain plug to 15 foot pounds.
