To change the belts on a 1999 VW Golf, start by disconnecting the battery for safety. Remove the engine cover and locate the serpentine belt; use a wrench to relieve tension on the tensioner pulley and slide the belt off. For the timing belt, you'll need to remove various components, including the timing belt cover, and align the timing marks before installing the new belt. Finally, reassemble everything, ensuring all connections are secure before reconnecting the battery.
