You need to prime a diesel.... Try to fill the filter with fuel if possible... There should also be a prime pump somewhere on the fuel system to get the fuel to the engine.

Yes
You can convert a petrol engine into a diesel engine by changing the fuel injectors. The fuel filters will also need to be changed.

A "dragging-starter" can fail to "spin" or rotate a diesel engine at an RPM sufficient to aid in the combustion process that is needed in a diesel engine. Although all glow plugs might be working effectively, if the starter fails to turn the engine over at sufficient RPM, the diesel fuel entering the combustion chamber can fail to ignite. Diesel engines have higher compression-ratios than gasoline engines and diesel fuel explodes in the compression chamber (if the glow plugs are functioning AND the engine is turning over fast enough when the starter is engaged. Starter motors on diesel engines are generally more robust than starters on gasoline vehicles. The additional higher-torque value on starters used in diesel applications provide the added boost needed to start the engine. SOUTHWESTUSA on Flicker (check out my stuff)
TDI stands for Turbo-charged Direct Injection
It is on the lower driver side of the engine.
To test the starter motor for a diesel engine fire pump, first ensure the battery is fully charged and connections are secure. Next, use a multimeter to check the voltage at the starter terminals while attempting to start the engine; it should be close to the battery voltage. If the voltage is low, inspect the battery and wiring for issues. If the voltage is adequate and the starter doesn't engage, the starter motor may be faulty and should be inspected or replaced.
