Automotive filters operate on different crankcase pressures and filter composition which is not suitable for air cooled engines. Always use the filter recommended by the manufacturer.

There is no difference between a small engine filter and a auto filter. Small engine manufactures do no make oil filters. The filters are made by the same companies that make auto filters and they are the same. You can cross reference the filter that fits your lawn tractor to another brand of filter which fits a car. Purolator is an excellent filter to use on a lawn mower. Write down the number on the filter you are using and go to Advance Auto Parts and they will cross reference it for you.
