One gallon no longer suffices to fill a radiator sufficiently, most of the times as when you need to do a full coolant flush or refill. A typical car cooling system has a minimum of 2 gallons and a maximum of 3 gallons of coolant depending on the size, type of the engine and the cooling capacity of the car. SUVs, trucks and performance cars may demand additional ones.
It is also good to take into consideration that most coolants are sold concentrated, which is, they must be diluted 50/50 with distilled water, thus a gallon of a concentrated coolant will produce two gallons of your usable mixture. But even in the case of pre-mixed coolant, more than a gallon will probably be required to adequately fill both the radiator and the overflow reservoir.
To achieve the desired results, however, you should always consult the owner manual of your vehicle on which type of coolant as well as its capacity should be.

You will have about 3/4 inch of coolant left in the container when the radiator is full. The overflow tank is there to hold coolant when the radiator gets warm and needs to expell some of the coolant. So just fill the radiator with coolant. You'll know when it's full.
