To have a local shop remove and replace the vinyl rear window of my '93 Miata would cost me $150. To replace the top with a new one could cost twice that amount. My solution: I removed the zip out window and spread it out as flat as can be. Then purchased for $20 a sheet of .80 mil (30" x 36") Duraplex by Plaskolite from Lowe's. Carefully cut out the old yellowed and blurry vinyl window, using it for a template. Allowing for an additional one 1" around the circumference, marked out the new window. Cut it out with jig saw with a fine tooth blade. Edges were then lightly polished with #200 paper. painted the 1" border on the "inner" side of the window to blend in with the black of the canvas/vinyl top. Mixed and spread epoxy glue (60 minute set time) around the "outer" 1" border. Carefully aligned the window on the inside, and pressed for the duration of setting time, using clean weighted objects, avoiding the clear part of the window. (Drying time for this product was 24 hours.) To insure securing the window in place, I used small aluminum male/female posts, placed 6" apart around the perimeter, screwed through the fabric and window. Reason for choosing this particular replacement product is that it is 100 times tougher than glass, easy to cut, and 10 year warranty against yellowing. For cleaning the window periodically, I'm using a clean soft cloth dampened with household alcohol, and dried with another soft cloth.

I am well pleased with the outcome. Total costs: around $30. Labor was free! Hope this information is useful to others. Phil

best way to replace a vinyl window?

Replacing vinyl windows is a relatively easy do-it-yourself project. If the problem you're having with the window is that it won't stay up this is also easy to fix. Open the lock mechanism at the top of the window. Remove the spring held in place by a screw. take the spring to the hardware store with you so you can get the appropriate length. Replace this spring. Your windows will now stay up and you won't need to replce the whole window.
