I know on my 98 2.0L it is under the rear passenger side. Undo the clamp and remove the old filter. Keep an eye on the directional arrow, and install the new filter. Retighten the clamp and you should be good to go. Only took us about 10 mins or less to change. We did ours at the hardware store parking lot as we had to buy a new clamp. Our was pretty rusty, and it was less then a dollar to buy new clamp, rather then have the old one brake while trying to tighten.
The oil filter on a 1998 Mercury Mystique is changed by lifting the vehicle up on ramps, placing a drain pan under the filter, and unscrewing it. A new filter is then put in place and torqued down.
Filter is internal and does not need service. There is a drain plug on the bottom of the trans. case for fluid drain. Refill thru dipstick tube.
Replacing ERG Valves in a 1998 Mercury Mystique is fairly hard because it requires great precision to avoid blocking the EGR passage.

Duck tape should do the trick
In a 1998 Mercury Mystique, the transmission filter is located inside the transmission pan. To access it, you need to remove the transmission pan, which involves draining the transmission fluid and unbolting the pan from the transmission housing. Once the pan is removed, you can replace the filter, which is typically mounted on the valve body. It's recommended to replace the transmission fluid and gasket upon reassembly for optimal performance.
