A Saturn 3.0 timing belt noise can indicate that the belt is becoming worn down. It can also indicate a bad gear.
loose timing belt, low transmission fluid in transaxle.
Early Saturn VUE's use a Opel designed V6 engine. This engine is also used in the Cadillac Catera, Saturn L series, and Saab vehicles. This engine does use a rubber timing belt that does have to be replaced every 90-100k miles. It should be noted this engine requires some very special tools to replace the timing belt. Pretty $$ tools. The tools can be rented here for 30 days: http://www.ledfix.com/timingbelttoolrental.html
two chains
The water pump is located under the timing belt cover. It is a Timing belt driven water pump. Recommend a professional mechanic replacement if needed. It usually costs about $250.00 Labor $100 for the water pump and about $30 for the timing belt.
Try at Dayco.com often the belt diagram is printed on the cardboard sleeve that the belt is packaged in
Behind the timing cover, while you are there, replace the timing belt, it's only $30.
Assuming you're talking about 30mph....could be the timing belt.
With a properly maintained vehicle a timing chain (not a belt) will last a very long time. Up to 30 years.
4.2 hours give or take 30 min.
remove right tire, unbolt the power steering pump, go underneat unbolt the alternators damper, remove the timing belt tensor, remove the old belt, put the new belt on and repeat the process backward... it can take between 45-1:30 hour to do this.
Cost for the belt is typically $45 (give or take). If you search online you can frequently find them on sale. This site is currently (2/13/09) offering them for about $30: http://www.drivewire.com/products/toyota-solara/timing-belt/8135/ Cheers
You have a very loud squeal when the engine is cold that goes away when warmede up usually after 30 secs. For a Saturn that's a dead giveaway If your belt deflection feels tight (check by taking the belt in a span between two pulleys and moving it up and down. If it's real sloppy, change the belt than try again.), more than likely your basing this on noise when operating, perhaps a squealing. That could also be related to a bearing in the power steering pump, alternator, or water pump. Squealing, slapping and whining are a few of the noise symptoms that can indicate a problem with a vehicle's engine accessory belt drive system. Critical accessories driven by the belt system include the generator/alternator, water and power steering pumps, and the air conditioner. To isolate the cause of the noise problem, listen to the engine when accelerating, when making a hard turn or when activating the air conditioning. A squealing noise that occurs when pulling away from a stop suggests incorrect belt drive tension. A slapping sound is likely caused by a loose belt that is not tensioned properly, or a seized belt tensioner. A growl or whine can indicate that a bearing in the tensioner or idler assembly is about to fail.
