Factory about 35. I usually go about 45, but no more than 60. Most hot rodders run as wide a gap as they can get away with & even index sometimes. Usually when you buy, the gap is about dead on to specs. measure a new one. If they are the washer type, you will feel it compress when you tighten-don't over do it.
The Spark Plug gap is .045
Per Champion spark plug applications chart, the gap for 1989 Chevy 305 (5.0L) is .035.
The recommended spark plug gap on a 1996 Chevy C1500 with a V8-305 engine is .060"

the fireing order for a Chevy 305 is 18436572 with #1 being the drivers side plug closest to the radiator.
