I had 91 crx with the rpm needle would jump around sometimes. Then my distributor went out and I replace it and the problem did not come back. ---------- The speedometer cable probably needs to be lubricated with graphite powder. Don't know how to access the cable though. I have the same problem on my 94 si, but strangely, the odometer does seem to be working fine.
You can try to knock on the dashboard area around the speedometer. Or you could resolder the PCB on the backside of your speedo. Probably a power spike, often when a Caravan is "jumped". Try pushing the odometer/trip odometer button for 4-8 seconds. When it starts running a diagnostic test the speedometer should start jumping around and then reset itself. If it doesn't last, you may have a bad circuit. If a 100.??? comes up, you have problem of some type, maybe related-maybe not.
- I have a 2002 Caravan with the similar symptoms - speedometer stopped working but tripometer and odometer still work. The speedometer needle is wrapped all the way around past the top speed and resting on the bottom of the needle resting peg. I saw a posting about reseting the dashboard by removing the IOD fuse and replacing it but that did not help. I also tried pressing the trip button in and turning the ignition on as described in another post with no luck. Has anyone solved this or do I have a faulty speedometer requiring replacement? thanks Steve
Nope, bet it was the other way around... Your speedometer stopped working and your check engine light came on. A broken speedometer (don't know what car so I can't pinpoint it) will cause a whole bunch of codes.
you need to replace dash illumination bulbs only problem the speedometer cluster has to be removed
I had the exact same problem with my 1995 accord. It would work sometimes for me but would hang up at 20mph. I had to replace the speedometer itself. However, keep your old one because when you get a new speedometer it will have 0 miles on it. I purchased mine off of the web for about $130.00. It was fixed after that.
I got the same issue a while ago. the sensor in the back is the ABS speed sensor (so ABS know how much power to send to the breaks). The cost is around 23$. once is fixed speedometer should work.
Fixing it depends on what the speedometer is doing. Chances are its making a funny noise and the needle is bouncing around. This would be due to a damaged or unlubricated speedometer cable. It is a cable that spins around in a plastic sheath connected to the back or your speedometer and to your transmission. Often times removing it and filling it with graphite powder will solve the problem. If its severely damaged you can replace it with a new one. If the cable isn't the problem you may have to replace the speedometer itself.
My 94 had the same problem. Had to replace cluster. Got one off ebay for $40.
It sounds as though your sensor is on its going of service. This is a simple replacement but first you have to locate where it is. Some are on top of the transmission . Some are on the side they can run from 42. to over a 100. shop around for the best deal. I have the same problem
Sounds like a bad cable
The main reason that a speedometer and odometer will stop is because the speed sensor, located on the back top area of the transmission, has gone faulty. The part can be had very easily at any auto parts store, or junkyard. The reason the check engine light is on is because the speed sensor signal goes thru the ECM (computer) for the car to run the different things. If the signal is intermitent, or interupted, the light is set, as well as the speedo and odometer not working.Another reason is that the ECM it's self is bad, you can locate the ECM behind the glovebox and give it a few knocks while the car is running, if your engine responds by cutting out (even just a little) then replace it. they are around $110.Since there is no speedo cable, it must be an electrical issue with a sensor.QuestionWhy is there no speedometer cable? Does it have digital gauges? The reason I ask, is, when I first got my 1986 Celebrity, the speedometer and odometer did not work. The previous owner had bought a new speed sensor, but had not had it put in yet. I installed it first thing. no luck. In checking the speedometer cable, I found it was broken, (the end of the cable at the tans-axle). After I replaced the speedometer cable, it worked fine. Now, I cannot imaging gm did away with speedometer cables in the two years before the 1988 came out. I do have a 1990 S-15 with digital gauges, and I know it does not have a speedometer cable. But, the 1990 Sunbird I used to own, with analog gauges, did have one.
