A blinking Check Engine warning light is far more serious than the normal one. The car has now become a danger to drive. A blinking Check Engine light means a number of things which all are reasons that need to be taken seriously. My first word of advice is, if you already haven't get the vehicle to a mechanic ASAP. the reason being that the car has not only become a danger to you but everyone around you in some cases. The blinking light can mean anything from an engine misfire, which can cause permanent damage to any part of your vehicle weather it be transmission or an air filter. It could also be the spark plugs. If the light starts to blink as soon as the engine is ignited, shut it down. Check the spark plugs because this could lead to an electrical misfire messing up the vehicles onboard computer and safety systems. Another reason could be the gas cap, if it's not screwed on right or it's loose this is another possible reason, if you fix this problem and the light is still there take the vehicle to the mechanic ASAP. What ever the reason be cautionary and still take the vehicle in for service
Check to see if your gas cap is tight.
It is indicating that there is a fault with the engine of the car. You need to take it to a garage for repair/service.
With a scan tool, or try turning key on, off, on, off, on and counting the blinks of the check engine light. blink, blink, blink, pause, blink would be 31.
On some if you turn key on, off, on, off, on. The check engine light may start to flash the code. blink, blink, bink, pause blink would be 31.
check ground wire on front of engine behind starter.
Cycle key on, off, on, off, on.
If the MIL blinks at the moment the engine bucks, them its a cold stall, were the engine is about to turn off, if the light is blinking on its own, is impossible, MIL are constantly on, because its a emission related code.
You need a OBD 1 system or take it to a mechanic to check.
first you nee to check and see if your car is referred to as OBDI or OBDII if its ODBI then you start with the car off.. turn the key to run but do not start the engine.. at this point you have less that 5 seconds to push the gas pedall all the way to the floor and press the overdrive button five times... then the check engine light will stay on.. and then blink... next its going to blink out the code for you for ex. blink-pause-blink blink-pause blink blink blink-pause blink n that would mean the problem code is 1231 just Google BMW problem codes and use that dcode to find out what the issue is..
Either with a scan tool, or by cycling the key on, off, on, off, on and counting the blinks of the check engine light. Two blinks, pause, one blink would be a 21.
The main reason for this is a sliping drivebelt, very common after you pressure wash the engine and the drivebelt gets wet; also Check the tension on the drivebelt. Another reason may be a defective expansion valve.
If the check engine light is blinking , that means an engine cylinder misfire has been detected . You can drive it in for repair , just avoid any rapid acceleration or deceleration because you can damage the catalytic converter
