Rattling in the trunk area of a vehicle can be caused by several factors, including loose or damaged components such as the spare tire, tools, or other items stored in the trunk. Additionally, worn or faulty suspension parts can lead to vibrations that resonate through the trunk. Lastly, issues with the trunk latch or hinges may also contribute to rattling sounds. Regular inspection and securing of loose items can help mitigate these noises.

Check the emergency trunk release handle. It is in the trunk area, at the rear of the vehicle. If it is not secured in the clip, it can get hung up on something in the trunk area and keep the trunk/hatch from closing. -Tim
Two main causes: the inner parts have failed, or the outer heat shield has failed.
