First thing to do is have the diagnostic trouble codes (DTC) read from the computer. They will provide the first 'lead' in your investigation.
From there you'll be able to focus on which part of the engine to test, repair, clean, and maybe replace.

A 1989 Chevy Cavalier will not stay running after it has started if the spark plugs are fouled, the fuel filter is dirty, or it has a vacuum leak. Taking the vehicle to a local mechanic or dealership can pinpoint the problem.
