In most automatic cars, in Great Britain where I live, all you have to do is put the car into D (Drive) and push the accelerator. This will automatically change the gears of the car up and down.
Drive. If it has a circle around it, it has automatic overdrive.

Answero/d light blinks when there is a problem in your transmission. take it to a good transmission mechanicIf your car does not have 2nd gear and the O/D light comes on with in the first couple of minutes of driving, the band for 2nd/OverDrive is broken and needs to be replaced, I have heard that if it is just the O/D light flashing that a separate transmission cooler will fix it.

The shifter. D is for drive which is forward and R is for reverse. N is for neutral. You have to have the breaks pressed down all the way in order to move out of park and into D or R.
