High Detergent as opposed to Non Detergent
This was a question my auto shop teacher asked my class back in 76, just what does the HD mean on a can (at that time, before bottles of oil) of oil. Got many different possible answers, Heavy Duty, High Detergent, etc. The correct answer is, absolutely nothing, or whatever the oil manufacturer wants it to mean. any modern 30 weight oil will work fine in your lawnmower.
Basically, the only difference between HD-46 and HD-68 hydraulic oils is the weight of the product. HD-46 is a 15 weight oil, but HD-68 is a 20 weight oil.
Remove oil pan on transmisson, filter is bolted on transmission inside of pan.
Always use the correct weight oil. If you mean can you use high detergent oil in an old car that recommends non-detergent oil, the answer depends. If this car used non-detergent and has never been overhauled, it may be unwise to use HD oil. The HD oil will start to clean out deposits in the engine which may clog oil passages. However if the engine has been overhauled then by all means start using a modern HD oil.
