The connection could leak gasoline, which would be a bad thing. O-Rings are used to provide a better seal between two hard surfaces. If they are not there, or fail, the results can be catastrophic. It was a failure of an O-ring that caused the space shuttle Challenger to explode.

Drain and remove the fuel tank. Remove the lock ring that holds the fuel pump in the tank. Remove nd replavce fuel pump. Re-assemble.
First remove the fuel tank then remove the pump assembly locking ring then remove the pump assembly.
you will have to drop the gas tank there are 2 bands holding the gas tank to the van with i think 15mm socket to take the bolts off . the fuel pump will be on top of the tank. disconnect the fuel lines, drop the tank. the fuel pump will be held on by a large screw on ring. unscrew the ring and the fuel pump will come out.
If it is mounted with screws then just remove the screws. If it is a locking ring, then the ring must be turned to remove than pump. The plate has screws and a retaining ring.
It will more than likely leak out the top when you fill the tank completely full.

The fuel pump on a mercury cougar is in the fuel tank. You are going to have to remove the fuel tank, take the lock ring off of the tank, and then pull the pump assembly out.
You will need to drop the fuel tank down and remove the retaining ring in the top so that you can install a fuel pump module.
Remove fuel tank. Use a brass punch to drive fuel pump lock ring counterclockwise. Remove pump and O-ring. Check inlet sock filter for damage or contamination, replace if required. Clean sealing area of tank and use a new O-ring when installing.
you will have to drop the fuel tank as the fuel pump is in the tank, undo the snap ring in top of tank and pry out pump and sending unit BE SURE NOT DAMAGE RING of tank,pull out and switch pumps and put back together make sure all SEALS then put snap ring back in and reassemble
