To my best guess and thinking. Gear oil is 90 weight oil and dexron3 is 10 weight oil. 90 wt. being thicker would cause your traqns to get hot and could burn up your trans. But, if it is an older transmission some auto makers recomend using heavier oil in the transmission. But this is only on a manual transmission. brewski
Only if you want to destroy your transmission. Dexron is a GM product and shouldn't be used in a Dodge. Use ATF+4 which has replaced the older ATF+3 transmission fluid.
dexron III
The automatic transmission in the 1988 Dodge trucks take Dexron II or Dexron III automatic transmission fluid. The manual transmission are as follows: A230/250/390/833 or overdrive 4 speed take Dexron II or Dexron III. NP2500 takes SAE 10W-30 engine oil. The NP435 takes SAE 90 GL5 gear lube, as does the NP445. The NP 4500 takes 75w-90 Castrol Syntorq synthetic gear lube or equivalent.
For ease of shifting, dexron transmission fluid is best. the other alternative is 80/90w gear oil.
my husband has a 1998 dodge truck and he uses GM Dexron-III/Mercon Automatic Transmission Fluid. You can buy at any automotive store. Dodge,Chrysler and Jeep products require ATF + 4 made by Chrysler. While it is okay in a pinch to top off with GM Dexron-III/Mercon, replacing it with that will cause you problems. They are different.
a big mess.
5w30 oil, "Green" colored coolant, "Dexron plus three" trans fluid and gasolne
If it's an automatic transmission, the dipstick will tell you what kind of fluid to use, i.e. Dexron Mercron III. If it's a manual trans, any parts store can tell you what oil to use. Mark DO NOT use Dexron/Mercon or plain ATF fluid. It will burn up the transmission in Chrysler/Dodge vehicles. Use ATF+3 or the newer ATF+4 only. When you get a bottle of ATF+3, it will say on the bottle FOR USE IN CHRYSLER VEHICLES. - Chryslerman
If a transmission speed sensor fails, the transmission will default to second gear.
ATF+3 or the newer ATF+4 ONLY!!!!! Using Dexron/Mercon or ATF will cause problems with the transmission and due to there not having the proper additives for the correct lubrication of the gears and can cause the transmission to 'burn up'.
i put 2 quarts dexron mercron tranny fluid in my dodge 2000 stratus it jerked once so i didnt drive it anymore and changed the fluid asap to synthetic will it be okay?
The Dakota 4.7 take ATF +4 fluid, not Dexron or Mercon. The capacity for a 45RFE transmission is 14 quarts after a complete drain. Otherwise, it is 10 quarts for a complete drain, or 4 quarts for a filter replacement.
