The color of the smoke determines what the problem is more likely to be. Bluish smoke means the engine is burning oil. Probable causes are worn valve guides or worn piston rings. White smoke is most likely to be steam caused by coolant in the exhaust system. A blown head gasket or cracked cylinder head would be likely. Black smoke indicates te engine is burning rich. Probable cuases are fouled spark plugs, faulty throttle position sensor, leaking injector(s).
