A "DIRECT SHORT" is a electrical circuit without any load, the load removed or having been bypassed due to mistake or breakage/damage.

Its like connecting LINE -1 to LINE-2 without any load, or motor or device between LINE-1 and LINE-2 ! LINE-1 to LINE-2 is a direct short.

Example, get an extension cord and cut off the female end,

strip the black and white wires incsulation back and wire nut the black to the white.

Now go plug in the cord!!!!

You do know what willl happen right? it will blow the nreaker/melt the cord/both?

Now do the same thing only get a fan motor and wire LINE 1 and LINE 2 to the motor, and its fine!

Yes a circuit without any load is a direct short! If you connect line 1 to line 2 and dont have any load in the circuit when you energize it, it will melt the wires and or blow the breaker!

Add any load to the direct shorted circuit, and its not a direct short any longer!

Al circuits require 2 sides of power,

a switch, unless unwanted? and a load, a load is any energy consuming device and will have a resistance to electricitys flow.
