An air flow meter, also know as air consumption meter, is a device that measures how much air is flowing through a tube. It does not measure the volume of the air passing through the tube, it measures the amount of mass flowing through the device in a defined time segment. So, an air flow meter is just an application of mass flow meters for a special medium.
Some cars can run without the airflow meter (though not properly), others cannot run at all.

check the airflow meter
The airflow meter is located on the air intake duct on the right hand side front of the 325i. 1) Remove the air cleaner assembly from the airflow meter. 2) Disconnect the electrical connector from the airflow meter. 3) Remove the nuts and lift the airflow meter from the engine compartment. I can explain how to perform checks to see if this is working before you change it if you wish. Please note the idle stabiliser valve and the throttle position switch can cause similar problems.
if the car is running rough whilst idleing or running, simply unplg the airflow meter and test drive the car. if the airflow meter is buggered- whilst it is unplugged it should run fine

To install a VL Commodore airflow meter on a 1988 Magna, you will need to adapt the mounting point to fit the Magna's intake system. This typically involves modifying the air intake piping to accommodate the airflow meter's design and ensuring a proper seal to avoid leaks. Additionally, you'll need to connect the electrical wiring from the airflow meter to the Magna's engine management system, which may require some custom wiring or harness adapters. Finally, ensure the setup is calibrated correctly for optimal performance.
orifice meter is used for measuring volume flow rate air.
Most cars will not operate without their airflow meters. For example, Holden Commodore (Alloytech engine) You remove the connector to the airflow meter when car is running, engine shutsdown and will produce extensive error codes.
It's located under the air filter. Remove air filter and 4 screws under it and mass airflow sensor is there
