I probably had the same issue you've had- the Briggs 5049D filter is expensive and not commonly stocked in stores. Exact-fit interchange filters are also rare- here is the only part number I've found, but is wasn't stocked anywhere I looked (auto parts stores, Wal-Mart, etc): FRAM: PH8170 (DIRECT: 3/4-16 THREAD, 2.22 LONG, 2.95OD, ANTI DRAINBACK VALVE). These are the exact specs of the Briggs 5049D. If you have room for the filter to be longer, than you have several options: PUROLATOR #L10241 (3/4-16, 3.36LONG, 2.98OD). I've installed this one and I've had no problems. This seems to be the most available and least expensive, but IT IS ABOUT 1-1/8" LONGER than the 5049D. If the extra length isn't going to cause an interference with anything near the engine, then I recommend this one. It is .030" larger in diameter, but that's about 1/32", which is nothing. Here are some other options, all longer (by varying amounts) and with the slightly larger diameter: FRAM #PH3614 (3/4-16, 3.34 LONG, 2.98OD) AC DELCO #PF53 (SAME AS FRAM PH3614) MOTORCRAFT #FL793 (SAME AS FRAM PH3614) FRAM #PH7575 (3/4-16 THREAD, 3.39LONG, 2.98OD) Hope this helps.
