Determine Flow Rate

Problem- What is the rank from the most viscous to the least viscous? (Molasses, glycol, motor oil, ethyl alcohol.)

Hypothesis-If we test the viscosity of all the liquids, then from the least viscous to the most viscous it would be ethyl alcohol, motor oil, glycol and molasses. I think this because the higher the viscosity is the slower the liquid will move. The lower the viscosity is, the liquid will move faster.

Materials-

ü Molasses

ü Glycol

ü Motor oil

ü Ethyl alcohol

ü Funnel

ü Test tube

ü Test tube brush

ü Inclined plain

ü Apron

ü Towel

ü Paper towel

ü Water

Procedure-

1. Put on apron.

2. Measure the same amount of each liquid and put it in different test tubes.

3. Pile up 5 textbooks and place inclined plain on the pile of books.

4. Measure 30 centimeters from top of inclined plain.

5. Pour molasses.

6. Record how much time it takes to flow 30 centimeters.

7. Clean inclined plain.

8. Repeat step 5-7 three times with the three other liquids.

9. Record observations.

Results-

Controlled Variables- Amount of liquid, temperature,

Manipulated Variables- type of liquid.

Responding Variables-

Two possible errors-We might have made an error when we timed the molasses. We might have been a little off. The temperature could have affected the viscosity of the liquid. At the beginning of the lab, it was warmer than during the focus of the lab. To make the timing better and more precise we could have used a stopwatch.

Manipulated Variable- Also known as Independent Variable, This is what the scientist purposely changes

Controlled Variable- Variable that stays the same

Responding Variable- Variable that May (usually) or may not change.

What liquids have a high viscosity?

Liquids with high viscosity flow slowly, like honey. Liquids with low viscosity flow quickly, like water and vinegar.

How do liquids with a high viscosity differ from a liquids with a low viscosity?

Because liquids with a high viscosity flow slowly as to where a liquid with a low viscosity flow quickly

Does the density of a liquid affect the liquids of viscosity?

denser liquids tend to have more viscosity

How do liquid with a high viscosity differ from liquid with a low viscosity?

The liquids with high viscosity flow slowly and liquids with low viscosity flow quickly.

The liquids with high viscosity flow slowly and liquids with low viscosity flow quickly.

How do liquids with high viscosity differ from liquids with a low viscosity?

Viscosity is a property of liquids, showing that liquid's resistance to flow. A liquid with a high viscosity would mean it flowed slowly. A liquid with a low viscosity would mean it flows rather quickly.

Is motor oil soluble?

All liquids have viscosity. The viscosity of crude oil is higher than water due to molecular adhesion forces which are forces that attract the various hydrocarbon compounds to each other. Crude oil has a very large range of viscosities. See related link.Read more: Why_is_oil_viscous

What are the characteristics of strain liquids and how do they differ from other types of liquids?

Strain liquids have a high viscosity, meaning they are thick and flow slowly. They can deform under stress but return to their original shape when the stress is removed. This sets them apart from other liquids, which have lower viscosity and do not deform as easily under stress.

Why do some liquids travel faster than others?

The speed at which a liquid travels is influenced by its viscosity - the resistance to flow. Liquids with lower viscosity flow more easily and thus typically travel faster than liquids with higher viscosity. Other factors such as temperature and pressure can also affect the speed at which liquids travel.
