Difference Between Alternators and Magnetos

An alternator puts out alternating current [AC]. That means that part of the time electrons flow in one direction in the wiring, and part of the time the electrons flow in the opposite direction. The number of times the direction of current flow changes direction is referred to as "cycles."

Even though the output of a magneto may be in pulses, the direction of flow of electrons is always in the same direction and is Direct Current [DC].

What does a ATV magneto do?

A magneto on an ATV works like an alternator or generator on a car. It creates power, which re-charges your battery and provides power to the electronics of the ATV.

Is there a difference between changing the alternator in a 2.3L grand am and a 2.4L?

Yes, there is a difference between changing the alternator in a 2.3L grand am than there would be in a 2.4L grand am, because it needs a more powerful alternator to turn over the engine

How do you time the magneto?

place the magnet on the flywheel in front of magneto and place a buisness card between flywheel and magneto and tighten magneto down.......remove buisness card..

Where does the voltage come from in an electric circuit?

Depends on which circuit. It can be from a battery, or a device called a generator, alternator, dynamo, or a magneto.

What is the difference between a magneto and a coil?

An ignition coil requires external electrical power. A magneto requires only mechanical power to create an ignition spark. If an engine HAS no electrical power (lawnmower, tiller, chain saw) then a coil would not function.

Does a Yamaha 1200xlt jet ski have an alternator?

Technically no. It has a magneto, which is a different way of converting mechanical energy into electrical energy that makes the ignition system simpler. But the net result is the same as if it had an alternator.

Briggs and stratton 6.75 magneto gap?

Most of the Briggs engines can be gapped simply with a business card between the flywheel and the magneto.

Why does a motorcycle with a 6v system put out more volts at higher rpms?

Magneto/alternator is spinning faster creating a higher current flow

The magneto air gap is a precision measurement thats taken between the?

The magneto air gap is a precision measurement that's taken between the edge of the flywheel and the ignition coil armature. The flywheel and the crankshaft are held together in alignment by the flywheel key.
