GDI simply means that the fuel injectors sit directly inside the combustion chamber of the engine cylinder. Along with the number of pros this system has like improved fuel efficiency and emission control this has the con of carbon deposits around valves resulting in improper sealing at closed valve position. A correction method to this is VVTi (Variable Valve Timimng with Intelligence) making the valves operate at the right time and speed so the valves are closed at the point of fuel injection so any fuel wouldnt get around valves for preceipitation

What is the difference between an EFI engine and a GDI engine?

EFI simply states that it's a fuel-injected engine( as opposed to a carburetor set up), and that's the fuel injection is controlled by electronics rather than by a mechanic fuel pump. GDI tells you that not only do you have a fuel-injected engine, but that the injectors are sitting closer to the combustion chambers(maybe even inside) which supposedly is good for fuel consumption and a clean burn.
