A timing belt has 'cogs'(running,side-to-side)across the width of the belt,which engage with the notches in the cam-n-crank pulleys,and a rib-belt has 'ribs' running along the length of the belt in various numbers(2,3,4,5,6,7,8,etc.)accommodating the grooves in the various pulleys,outside the timing cover,as to,the altenator,A/C,power steering,water pump,crank shaft pulley,etc..
