The fluid in chloroplasts is called stroma. It is a gel-like substance that surrounds the thylakoid membranes, where the light-dependent reactions of photosynthesis occur. The stroma contains enzymes, chloroplast DNA, and ribosomes, facilitating the synthesis of glucose during the light-independent reactions, also known as the Calvin cycle.
