In New York State, the minimum thickness for rear brake shoes during an inspection is typically 1/8 inch (or approximately 3.2 mm). If the brake shoes are worn down to this thickness or less, they must be replaced to pass the inspection. Additionally, inspectors may also consider the overall condition of the braking system, including any signs of damage or uneven wear.

A brake wear rating of 10B on a Pennsylvania state inspection report refers to the condition of the brake lining. The rating is given based on the thickness of the brake lining, with 10 indicating that the lining has 10/32-inch or more thickness, which is considered to be in good condition. The letter "B" denotes that the brakes have been inspected and found to be in satisfactory condition, without any need for immediate repair or replacement.
