There is a ton of stuff to know about fire fighting. This business (or profession) is overflowing with technical information that the fire fighter must know, and there are a zillion practical skills that the fire fighter must have. His life and the lives of his fellow fire fighters depend on the knowledge and skill of the fire fighter. There is a fitness standard necessary for qualification and for safety. And physical training is a part of continued qualification. Some people thrive on the "rush" of code 3 work, and they get a "contact high" at the danger. These have to be managed so the fire fighter remains a part of both the team and the solution to a situation, and not slip over to the "dark side" and become part of the problem. There is a "fair" pay scale for these jobs, and benefits are usually fairly good. But competition for the jobs is fierce. There may be hundreds of applicants for a half dozen positions in a big city department. Use the links below to Wikipedia articles where you can find lots of additional information.
