If the battery is less than 4 or 5 years old. the most likely reason's are 1- The alternator not working at all. 2 - the belt to the alternator broke. 3 - cables at the battery are corroded. 4 - the battery can be almost completely dead.
To check alternator. Get a jump from someone, if car starts, check the voltage at battery terminals. It should read approximately 15 volts. with all connections and belts OK. If it reads below, say 13 volts, then alternator or voltage regulator is no good. If it starts with a jump, and alternator reads OK ,then let engine run for about 15 minutes. stop engine and check voltage across terminals, it should be 12.5 volts. IF below 12.4 volts, replace battery, but first do a battery drain test. Disconnect negative battery terminal, with all accessories off, connect a test light to battery clamp and negative post, if light comes on, there is a short, discharging the battery.
Turning the lights on put a load on the alternator causing the idle speed to drop. I would have the battery and charging system tested to make sure everything is okay. The battery may be on its way out.
The oil and battery lights might be showing on your shogun when driving due to an electrical problem. A mechanic can properly diagnose the problem.
charge the battery
If you know it is the battery then try using a charger to charge the battery, make sure that you clean the battery connection terminals. If the battery will not take a charge from a charger then replace it, if a battery gets too dead it can't be revived. Also, have your alternator checked before driving if you didn't cause the problem with sitting or leaving the lights on etc.
the battery is low, need to be charge
Pressing the button on an iBook's battery will illuminate a string of lights; the number of lights illuminated indicates how much charge is left in the battery.
The Milwaukee battery lights may be flashing back and forth due to a low battery charge or a malfunction in the battery or the light itself. It is recommended to check the battery charge level and try charging it fully, or contact Milwaukee customer support for further assistance.
Weak battery? not holding a sufficient charge Alternator not charging battery sufficiently?
No. A bad battery is not causing your dash lights to go on and off. A different part is bad. Without equipment I have no idea what it is.
Alternator straining to maintain battery charge?
The most common cause for your 1997 Honda Civic lights to dim is a bad alternator. The alternator is not charging the battery. The battery retains a small charge, but not enough charge to run the engine.
Defective battery or something is pulling power from the battery. Check the glove box light, interior lights, trunk light, hood light, brake lights, etc.
