Toyota likely recommends a 5W-30 (viscosity) oil for your 1996 Toyota Camry. It should 4 or 5 quarts. When changing the oil, put in 4 quarts, run the engine and check for oil leaks (drain plug and oil filter) and shut the engine off. Check the oil level on the dipstick in 15 minutes or so. This will indicate whether an additional quart is needed. If you live in a very warm climate (Florida, etc.)you could also 10W-30 or 10W-40 oil without any adverse affects. It is probably wise to use a non-synthetic oil in an engine of this vintage.
