It does not HAVE a timing belt. It has a timing chain and it will most likey last the life of the engine.
Never, it is designed to last the life of the engine and is normally replaced when the engine is overhauled.
The timing on that year engine is computer controlled. It requires an engine scanner to set the timing. YOU CAN NOT USE A TIMING LIGHT.
The timing is set on a 98 Chevy Silverado 1500 5.7L by aligning the cam sprocket with the timing chain markings. The engine's computer will then make adjustments on the fly for any additional timing changes needed.
That requires a OBDII engine scanner. You can not use a timing light. The timing is computer controlled.
It is behind the timing cover on the front of the engine. You will have to remove the timing cover to get to it.
It has a timing chain for sure.

It is in the front of the engine behind the timing cover. Not in the oil pan. You will have to remove the front of the engine to get to it. Tough Job
