The coolant level is set by the level in the coolant reservoir. There is a line for the level if the engine is cold and a line for if the engine is up to temperature. You should fill it to the corresponding line.

i would go to your local auto parts store and ask them for a raidiator flush kit. it should be a bottle of chemicals that you run through your raidiator and then drain it and replace your coolant. it should have all the directions you need on the bottle

Check you oil level! Also there should be a wire attached to around the area of the oil pan. That sensor controls the coolant level, oil level and that wire.
Could be the sensor that has gone bad if the coolant level is correct. Find a trustworthy mechanic to check that out.
