If you go to the Crutchfield.com website, they are experts at this stuff. You'll be able to type in your year/model and they will tell you everything you want to know. Try their site, it is easy. There are 6" X 8" speakers in the doors of my '98 by the way.

The speakers in the doors of a 1991 Ford Ranger are 6-inch speakers.
Crutchfield shows the DOOR speakers to be 5 1/4" and the REAR speakers to be 6" X 8."

Rear speakers: simply unscrew the 4 screws that hold on the cover then you have access to the speakers. Front speakers: you will have to take the interior door panel off this should give you access to the front doors.

I had the same problem with my 02 Ford Ranger the sensor is inside the door (genius idea ford). no amount of wd40 helped. luckily for me it was my passenger door. I just unplugged it and the dome light doesn't turn on for the passenger door but works find for the driver's door.
The door speakers are 5.25 inches but you have to purchase an insert in order to replace the door speakers.
the front door and back door speakers are 6" x 8 " speakers
Not sure how your speakers are installed, but Haynes Manual says: Remove speaker screws; pull out speaker; remove speaker wires; installation is reverse.
