The drain plug is a 15/16" socket on the m5od R2 transmission. I have heard of guys being able to use a 24mm in a pinch since it is only .007" larger than the 15/16".
Your Truck has a M5R2 Transmission and calls for ATF. The Drain plug is on the drivers side plainly labeled DRAIN. The Fill plug is also on the drivers side about half way up and is the same size as the Drain Plug. As can be seen in this picture http:/www.fivaxis.comm5r2rebuildpt37.jpg just below the Special Bolt. If you are wanting to rebuild then the site http://www.fivaxis.com/m5r2rebuild/ also goes into detail on the subject, another site would be http://www.mn12performance.com/mn12how-to/m5r2_rebuild/m5r2-rebuild-howto.html but as with all things always use a manual.Hope This Helps.Any questions I'll be happy to try and answer them for you.
The 1996 F150 owners manual shows the 5 - speed overdrive ( Mazda R2 ) capacity as 3.8 U.S. quarts (3.6 liters )
You will need to get the Tag number then go to provided link and look her up. [http://www.drivetrain.com/tagtokitconvfordtrk.html What Ford transmission do I have, Toyo-Kogyo, Maxda M5R1, M5R2, Mitsubishi, FM145, FM146]
It is located on the driver side of the M5R2 manual 5 spd trans. you find it just ahead of the tail shaft on the upper part of tranny. it has a sealing connector with two prongs.
For the older 1980-1982(9th gen) models, there were only manual transmissions For 1983-1986(10th gen) you could get either For 1987-1988(11th gen) both options were also available 1989-1997(12th gen): Only the Thunderbird SC came with a manual transmission: the Mazda based M5R2 5-speed manual. The Thunderbird base model and Thunderbird LX came with a 4-speed automatic transmission with overdrive: AOD 4-speed 1989-1993 and 4R70W 4-speed automatic from 1994-1997. (There is no 1998 Thunderbird) (Also there is no 5.0 after 1993 as ford went with the new 4.6L Modular engine used in the Mustang.) However, you can use a Mustang or Fairmont/Zephyr V8 as a donor for parts as everything is basically bolt in unless you have the inline 6 cylinder.
Yes you can, it's all about the patience you may have or lack of for the matter. You will need. 1. a ZF-S5-42 Manual transmission 2. The corresponding transfer case (if a 4 wheel drive model) 3. Rear Driveline from same model truck (keep in account of Bed length and cab length) 4. Front Driveline (again....if applicable) a day or 2 with proper tools and/or help.
