Where is the belt tensioner on a ford 2003 f350 6l diesel? i need to loosen so that i can replace the alternater
there is no repair for a belt tensioner. just buy a new tensioner. remove old belt, remove old tensioner, it is held on with one bolt. install new tensioner. install new belt
Use a long breaker bar with a 3/8" or a 1/2" drive on it and insert the drive into the square on the tensioner,it should be easy to see, then release the tension on the belt, then remove the belt and install new belt then you can put the tensioner back on to the belt by moving the tensioner so the belt will slip on. Look on your radiator top support there is a diagram of how the belt goes around all the pulley's.
Take a 1/2" ratchet ot breaker or torque wrench without a socket and place it in the square slot in between the two small pulleys on the auto tensioner and pull hard towards the passenger side fender - the belt will come off. Be careful and make certain that your ratchet is secure in the slot!
First, release the tension on the belt with a 1/2" breakover or ratchet to remove the belt. You don't need a socket, the square part is what is needed, there is a square hole for it. Then simply take a (I believe a 15mm but I know its metric) socket or wrench and unscrew the bolt and the whole thing should come off the front of the engine. Is that engine a turbo-diesel 7.3L Indirect Injected engine? My Dad has a 1993 IDI turbo diesel non-powerstroke that I've worked on many times. Other than the tranny and rear differential, there's not much I haven't had the chance to work on.
If your F350 has a serpentine belt it really can't be 'tightened'. The tensioner, located on the passenger side second pully down on a 7.3 PSD, is what provides the tension on the belt. If you are getting slack then it is probably time to replace the tensioner. If you are at all mechanically inclined it is a fairly easy task. Even if you are not and have a Haynes manual you can probably knock it out in a few hours.
