To check the transmission fluid level in a 1989 Ford E350, start the engine and let it warm up to normal operating temperature. With the engine running, locate the transmission dipstick, usually found near the back of the engine bay. Remove the dipstick, wipe it clean, reinsert it, and then remove it again to check the fluid level. The fluid should be between the "Full" and "Add" marks on the dipstick; add fluid if necessary, ensuring it's the correct type for your vehicle.
If you're lucky maybe the transmission fluid level is just too low.
