What is an area navigation?
An aircraft navigation system in which radial and distance information from a Vortac station or distance information from two or more Vortacs is used to fix aircraft position, so that navigation is not restricted to airways or direct routes between stations.
How do you open a flight plan in flight?
The local flight service station (FSS). You can call them by phone or by radio. For example, the FSS for the area where I live (Phoenix AZ) is at Prescott airport, phone (928) 778-0314 There are various frequencies which are remoted to various VORTAC facilities, the frequencies for which are as shown on Terminal Area and Sectional charts. These FSS's are run under contract to the FAA by Lockheed, Martin Inc
What is a vor?
V(ery high frequency) O(omni) R(ange). VOR consists of a four antenna system that transmits voice (automatic terminal information service), identification (to identify the VOR) as well as azimuth information to aircraft. The VOR may be stand alone or used in conjunction with a TACAN ( Tactical Air Navigation) system. This configuration is know as the VORTAC.
