During normal driving, spring brakes are typically held back by air pressure in the brake system. This pressure keeps the brake chambers compressed, preventing the springs from engaging the brakes. If the air pressure drops below a certain level, the springs will automatically engage, applying the brakes to prevent the vehicle from moving.
