I was under the impression that GM used timing CHAINS for all of their V6 engines... but I've been wrong before. If it's truly a timing belt, most manufacturers will recommend changing every 60K to 75K miles. If it's a chain, wait for the engine to wear out and do it all at once. The 1991-96 Oldsmobile 3.4L V6 does indeed have a timing belt. It should be replaced every 60,000 miles. The belt also drives the water pump, so I would recommend you install a new water pump at the same time to avoid future labor costs. The 1996 engine is an interference engine so it is imperative that the belt be replaced on time.
The timing chain is designed to last the life of the engine unlike a timing belt.
It has a chain and not a timing belt. No maintenance required.
there is no timing belt. It is a timing chain that requires no maintenance.
The 3.4 liter V6 engine in a 1998 Oldsmobile Silhouette has a timing CHAIN
Timing gun
Normally it will last the life of the engine and is changed when the engine is overhauled.
You should always replace the timing chain, tensioners and sprockets whenever you rebuild the engine.
The 3.8 liter V6 engine has a timing CHAIN
The timing chain is designed to last the life of the engine.
Timing chains should last the life of the engine and are normally replaced when the engine is rebuilt.
