A hyphen, to be precise. Officially, "e-mail" is listed as an abbreviated compound word, an amalgam of "electronic" and "mail", even though the term "electronic mail" is not compounded nor hyphenated.

* Personally, I think it is a simple contraction like "g'day" (good day). According to the rules, it should be written as "e'mail", but nobody asked me. Until now, that is.
