The 8th digit in the VIN is the engine code. For a Monte SS, it should be a "G" for the L69 305. I don't believe that engine was available in any other model of Monte Carlo.

No. It may shift hard or late, but the light will not go on. Ask your local auto parts store to scan the code(s) from your vehicle. The code(s) will help lead you to the reason the check engine light is on.
