You are looking at a coil on plug set up. This means there are a total of 8 coils 4 on either side of the intake. You must Remove the coils to change the plugs. You will find 1 plug under each coil.

i know if you have the 5.4L V8 you will have coil packs. not spark plugs

Their are two valve covers on each side the four spark plugs are mounted in the engine block just below each of the Valve covers
According to the 2001 Ford F-150 Owner Guide : For the 4.2 liter V6 engine : ( the spark plugs are gapped at .052 to .056 inch ) * confirm with the Vehicle Emissions Control Information ( VECI ) decal in the front of your engine compartment

I believe the dealership gets 190.00 time and plugs
on top of engine underneath the coil pacs .some depending on engine are really tight next to fuel rail and fuel injectors.. fordtech
