On a 1996 C 220 the crankshaft sensor is located on the rear of the motor on the drivers side. On my vehicle it is pretty well hidden below a silver part that I am not sure what it is. I can see the bolt that removes the sensor and I have felt down and removed the connection but I still cannot get the sensor out yet.
On all of the W202, the crank positioning sensor is located on the same spot. Sitting on the drivers seat, think about 10 o'clock on the engine. It is usually a tight spot to get your hands in there. You'll have to remove the top cover (snap off) and you should be able to spot it just before the joint between the engine and transmission. It is secured by one torx bolt and has one connector with either one or two securing tabs.

The crank position sensor is the sensor that measures TDC or top dead center of the crankshaft. Its located on the bell housing of the transmission and is a magnet type sensor and measures a toothed ring on the flywheel, can be access ususlly from the top of the engine at the rear/drivers side. they def. go bad and can cause crank/no start complaints......especially when hot!
