I have a 1989 and a 1991 aerostar, so forgive me if I'm wrong. On both of my vans, the fuel filter is located under the vehicle, under the drivers seat, closer to the side of the door than the side of the transmission. mine are cylindrical, but are covered by a square guard.
When in doubt, follow the fuel line coming out of your gas tank. It has to reach the filter before it reaches the intake manifold.
